Biography

Dr. Monika Ivantysynova is the Maha Professor of Fluid Power  Systems and Director of the Maha Fluid Power Research Center at Purdue University. She holds a joint appointment in the School of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. She is a thrust leader, test bed leader and member of the Executive Committee of the NSF funded Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP).  She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Slovak Technical University Bratislava in 1979 and completed her Ph.D. at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Slovak Technical University Bratislava in 1983. She worked in the fluid power industry for seven years, and returned 1991 to academia. In 1996 she received a Professorship in fluid power & control at the University of Duisburg, Germany, and became in 1999 a Professor of Mechatronic Systems at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, Germany.

In August 2004 she joined the Purdue University faculty as the Maha Named Professor of Fluid Power Systems. At Purdue, Dr. Ivantysynova established the Maha Fluid Power Research Center, where she has served as a director since 2004. Her research centers on modeling and computational design of piston pumps and motors and advanced system architectures, control and power management concepts for energy efficient actuation and drive systems including hydraulic hybrid systems. The current research includes concepts for various construction machines, off road and on road vehicles as well as special machines. She has written a book on hydrostatic pumps and motors, has published more than 200 papers in technical journals and at international conferences. Her research work has generated 18 patents and several patent applications that have been recently filed. Dr. Ivantysynova’s research on valveless hydraulic actuation systems has the potential to revolutionize the fluid power industry.

Dr. Ivantysynova is editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Fluid Power and an initiator and scientific board member of the first virtual network of fluid power research and education centers world wide, the Fluid Power Net International (FPNI), which has become the Global Fluid Power Society in 2017 after a merger with the European Centers of Fluid Power.

Dr. Ivantysynova’s achievements have been honored by many different societies and organizations. She has been awarded the Joseph Bramah Medal 2009 for her outstanding commitment to international fluid power research and education, particularly in the field of hydrostatic pumps and motors by the United Kingdom’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers. In 2010 she received a honorary doctorate from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. In 2014 she has been awarded the SAE fellow Grade of Membership for her outstanding achievements in fluid power research, developing energy efficient systems for mobile vehicle applications. In 2015 she received as first women 2015 Robert E Koski Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.  She was also elected ASME fellow in 2015. Recently she was honored  with the 2016 Purdue Morrill Award for making significant contributions in each of the university’s mission areas and for her advancement of the field of fluid power. In 2017 she received her 2nd honrary doctorate from Lappeenranta University in Finland.
